Dr. Arlene G. Ozanne of the Department of Economics, University of Otago delivered a special lecture on "The Effects of the Christchurch Earthquakes on the New Zealand Economy" on November 27. Forty-four International Career Course freshmen students in the School of Economics gathered together with some faculty and office staff members to attend this lecture. Dr. Ozanne is visiting the University of Hyogo with a grant from the Hyogo Overseas Research Network (HORN) program. Similar to Japan, New Zealand is a country located in the Pacific Ring of Fire making it vulnerable to earthquakes. As a labour economist, Dr. Ozanne shared with us her expertise by explaining the impact of the recent Canterbury earthquakes on the local economy particularly in employment. She described the characteristics of the New Zealand job market and how employment opportunities in certain industries changed after the earthquake. In particular, the housing and tourism industries suffered significant job losses. Jobs in retail and hospitality sectors particularly for female workers decreased significantly as several business establishments were damaged or closed down due to safety reasons. On the other hand, rebuilding the damaged areas has resulted in an increase in employment in the construction industry which has shown a slight increase in average hourly earnings.
Dr. Ozanne also showed slides about the University of Otago, New Zealand's first university located in the beautiful South Island city of Dunedin-- New Zealand's oldest city and erstwhile capital. Aside from answering questions from students regarding earthquake preparedness and recovery, Dr. Ozanne also provided information about education and working holiday opportunities for those students who are interested in visiting New Zealand. The Faculty of Economics is grateful to the Hyogo Earthquake Memorial 21st Century Research Institute's HORN program for giving our students and faculty members the chance to meet Dr. Ozanne in Kobe and learn more about the Canterbury earthquakes and New Zealand in general.
